The Taxpayer Action Board gave its report to Quinn on Thursday. The
governor is reviewing it with legislative leaders.
One recommendation is a 2 percent to 3 percent across-the-board
cut in state operating -- a move the panel says could save $270
million in the coming fiscal year.
The board says the state could save $95 million by managing the
care of Medicaid patients more effectively and as much as $65
million by releasing some nonviolent offenders from state prisons.
State leaders failed to come up with a new state budget by their
May 31 deadline. Quinn and legislative leaders are trying to hammer
out a deal before the new budget year begins next month.
