[June 09, 2009]  (AP)  Severe weather was expected over parts of the eastern and central U.S. on Tuesday, with the possibility of large hail, strong winds and heavy rains.

Scattered showers and thunderstorms were expected along the front stretching from New England, down the Ohio Valley, over the mid-Mississippi Valley and into the Plains.

Unseasonably cool temperatures were expected on the northern half of the front, with highs in the 60s over the northern Plains and upper Midwest. Light precipitation was to extend into the northern Rockies, with snow possible on peaks.

Elsewhere, the West Coast and Southwest were to remain warm and dry while sea breeze flow over Florida would continue triggering afternoon showers and thunderstorms.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Monday ranged from a low of 28 degrees at Sheridan, Wyo., to a high of 100 degrees at Midland Airpark, Texas.
