AMVETS answers questions about All Veterans Park

Send a link to a friend

[June 19, 2009]  AMVETS Post 71 is often asked questions concerning All Veterans Park and the Veterans Honor Roll. To help, they have compiled the most frequent questions as well as the answers.

RestaurantWhere and what is All Veterans Park/Veterans Honor Roll?

The park is located on a triangular piece of ground surrounded by Union and Pekin streets and College Avenue. The Veterans Honor Roll is composed of 4-by-8-inch gray granite imprinted bricks carrying information on honored veterans who have served in the U.S. military and were honorably discharged or are still serving. The bricks surround the All Veterans Memorial Monument that was erected in 1988. The brick project began in February of 2004, and there are now 2,231 memorial bricks laid. This project is a tribute to all veterans who have served or are now serving in any capacity in a United States war or conflict of any kind.

Who is eligible?

Any male or female who has served in any United States military service in any capacity in any war, including the National Guard and Reserves or units that were formed before the established aforementioned military.

Need they have been killed in battle?

NO! And they can be deceased or still living. They can be serving now or retired. They can be from any battle since the formation of the United States through today.

Do they need to reside in or be a citizen from Logan County, past or present?

NO! They can be from any place if they served in the U.S. military, National Guard, Reserves or any of the earlier U.S. military actions.

What is put on the bricks?

We do request the veteran's name and the area served, such as Indian Wars or Europe or the Pacific, etc. If career veterans today, they choose just what they wish to be identified with … years of service, for instance, the name of a ship they served aboard, etc. They can include their retiring rank. If retired, career veterans can list all the years they served.

The rest of the space left can be completed with your own information as desired.

Who can purchase the bricks?

Anyone. Bricks can be purchased by the veterans themselves, family members or friends. They make wonderful gifts for all occasions. You may purchase as many bricks as you wish, covering all the veterans you desire to honor, from your great-great-great-great ancestors to your present veterans.

Did the veteran have to serve overseas?

NO! The veteran need only have served the United States in the capacity so ordered. They could have served stateside or overseas.

How are bricks ordered?

Stop by All Veterans Park in the 100 block of Union Street and pick up as many forms as you need, one form for each brick ordered, from the form container across the sidewalk from the directory. Complete the form in its entirety and attach a check for $35 per brick. The form is self-explanatory. If you are ordering more than one brick, put all the forms in one envelope. You can write checks for each brick if you desire or for the total amount due for all the bricks ordered.

Be sure to complete the form legibly. The information you put on the form is what is imprinted on the bricks. Do not provide any more than 13 characters (letters, numbers, spaces, commas, periods, etc.) for each line. You have three lines to complete on each form. Each brick will be completed in three lines.

Also fill in the lines for the name, address and phone number of the purchaser completely, as this is where you can be contacted if we need more information.

Upon receipt of the forms and checks, they are recorded that same day and delivered to the monument company to be imprinted. It takes time to finish up the bricks, so the next laying of bricks will be whenever enough bricks are ordered and ready to be laid. This is an unknown date.

If you are unable to get to All Veterans Park to pick up forms, you can call 1-217-732-8829 and one or more will be mailed to you. If no one is available to take your call, an answering machine will. PLEASE talk slowly and distinctly, giving your name, address in full and telephone number. Several calls have come in and could not be deciphered, so we had to wait for someone to call again with the information. The number of forms required will be mailed to you immediately.

The AMVETS organization requests that those of you who wish to have bricks laid send in your forms and checks immediately. The spaces are filling. Do not be disappointed and find out you waited too long and no space is left. Do it today. The sooner the forms are received, the sooner the bricks can be laid in the Veterans Honor Roll when there are enough orders.

We trust your questions have been answered. If not, call 732-8829.
