[June 24, 2009] (AP) Severe weather will persist over the Upper Midwest on Wednesday as a strong cold front from Canada dips into the Great Lakes and the central Plains.

Strong winds, large hail and tornadoes could accompany the moderate-to-heavy showers and thunderstorms expected in the region. As a result, temperatures in the northern Plains will drop slightly, bringing an end to a spate of recent heat advisories. [Click on map for larger image.]

However, heat advisories will remain in effect in the mid- and lower Mississippi River Valley, with temperatures likely approaching 100 degrees.

The Mid-Atlantic states and the Northeast will see sunny skies and warm weather, although scattered showers could develop along the coast. Showers and thunderstorms will linger over Florida.

In the West, scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected to develop from monsoonal moisture over the Southwest and southern Rocky Mountain region. But most of the precipitation will evaporate before hitting the ground.

The mercury will dip slightly in Washington and Oregon, while California holds steady in the 80s and 90s.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Tuesday ranged from 24 degrees at Stanley, Idaho, to 113 degrees at Death Valley, Calif.
