Fatal crash near Elkhart claims Chicago man's life

[June 30, 2009]  SPRINGFIELD -- Illinois State Police District 9 released the following accident report Monday night:

Incident: Fatal crash

Location: Interstate 55 southbound, Elkhart exit

Date, time: June 29, 8:15 p.m.

Person involved: 56-year-old male, Chicago

Assisting agencies: Logan County Sheriff’s Department, Logan County Paramedic Association. Elkhart Fire Department.

Narrative: The male driver was southbound on Interstate 55 in a black 2007 Dodge pickup. The driver was traveling in the left lane when he drifted onto the east shoulder. He overcorrected, traveled across the interstate and entered the ditch on the west side of I-55. The vehicle rolled and came to final rest on its wheels, facing south.

The driver was transported to St. John's Hospital in Springfield, where he later died. The name is being withheld pending notification of relatives.

The Logan County Sheriff's Department assisted Illinois State Police.
