[March 05, 2009]  (AP)  Wet weather was forecast for the Northwest and the Plains on Thursday, while high pressure was keeping much of the East dry and warm.

Snow was anticipated across the Northwest, with several inches possible in the mountain regions. The Northwest coast was to receive rain instead of snow. Winds across the region also were expected to be somewhat gusty.

RestaurantIn the Southwest, clouds and precipitation were to drift across the Rockies. Parts of California were to continue seeing rain during the day, with snow expected over the mountains in the eastern portion of the state.

In the Plains, a mix of rain, snow and ice was anticipated over the northern Plains during the first part of the day. The precipitation was then expected to change over to just a mix of rain and snow, with a few inches of snow possible in some areas. Meanwhile, dry and windy conditions were expected over parts of the central and southern Plains, creating a fire risk.

Partly to mostly cloudy skies were expected over the Mississippi Valley, with rain and freezing rain anticipated over the Upper Midwest.

Clouds associated with the storm were to be present across most of the Ohio Valley. In the afternoon the clouds were to move into the rest of the Northeast. Precipitation was to work its way across the region toward the end of the day.

The Southwest was to experience mostly clear skies.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states on Wednesday ranged from a low of minus 27 degrees at Clayton Lake, Maine, to a high of 89 degrees at Woodward, Okla.
