[March 07, 2009]  SPRINGFIELD -- Military personnel may soon receive an additional benefit from the state of Illinois, thanks to a bill introduced by state Sen. Larry Bomke, R-Springfield. Senate Bill 1461 would restore a practice that was taken off the books after Operation Desert Storm.

Insurance"Senate Bill 1461 is a little way to thank military personnel in harm's way who are serving our county," Bomke said. "The bill would give $100 to every returning service member on their arrival back to Illinois."

The bill which is scheduled to be heard in a state Senate committee next week, was the suggestion of a local resident.

"We got the idea when we were approached by a Vietnam veteran who really appreciated the ‘thank you' from Illinois after he arrived home," Bomke said. "It turns out that the program was canceled, so I introduced this legislation to reinstate it."
