[March 17, 2009]  (AP)  Storms over the Northwest on Tuesday were expected to dump snow over the mountains and a mix of rain and snow over lower elevations, while unseasonable warmth swept from the Southwest to the Midwest.

HardwareClouds will persist over the Northwest for the entire day, although the precipitation should begin to quiet down toward the end of the day as high pressure slowly begins to build in the area.

The front will extend over the northern Plains and into the upper Midwest. A few scattered showers could develop near the end of Tuesday.

Further south, high pressure will extend over most of the central and southern Plains. Mostly clear skies and warm temperatures were anticipated over the region.

Very dry and breezy conditions are also anticipated over parts of the region, creating a fire hazard in some areas. Meanwhile, high pressure will also bring mostly sunny skies to most of the Southwest.

Over the East Coast, rain associated with a front located just off of the coast of the Southeast will continue to linger over the coastal areas of the Southeast and parts of the Mid-Atlantic states.

As the day progresses, the front will move away from the coast, allowing the precipitation to die down and most of the clouds to clear out sometime in the evening. Mostly sunny skies were in store for the rest of the East Coast.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Monday ranged from a low of minus 10 degrees at Clayton Lake, Maine, to a high of 88 degrees at Daytona Beach, Fla.
