[March 18, 2009]  (AP)  A storm front extending from the Plains to the Northeast was threatening heavy rainfall and gusty winds Wednesday, while most of the West and South was to stay dry.

In the Plains, the front will trigger a line of showers and thunderstorms across parts of the central Plains and into the Midwest.

HardwareThe northern Plains will see decreasing clouds throughout the day as high pressure begins to build over the area, while the southern Plains will see mostly clear skies to start the day before a few clouds from the north drift over the region.

The front also will extend through the Northeast. A line of showers will develop along the front in the Ohio Valley and into the northern Mid-Atlantic states and New England.

The southern Mid-Atlantic states can expect some clouds and possibly a few showers. Farther south, a ridge will cover the Southeast during the day, providing mostly clear skies for the region.

In the Northwest, a front just off the Pacific Northwest coast will provide cloudy skies and a few rain and snow showers for the region. High pressure will produce mostly clear skies and warm temperatures for most of the Southwest.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states on Tuesday ranged from a low of minus 2 degrees at Presque Isle, Maine, to a high of 96 degrees at Minot Air Force Base, N.D.
