Taking an inbounds pass with 5.4 seconds left in the first half, James quickly dribbled into the frontcourt, pulled up on Hawks guard Mario West and drilled a 36-footer to make it 59-35. As 20,000-plus fans erupted, James stood still after the horn sounded, playfully swinging his arms back and forth.
The Cavs wasted no time putting the Hawks away in the third. James hit a 3-pointer to push Cleveland's lead to 30 and fed Zydrunas Ilgauskas for a basket that made it 83-47.
Anderson Varejao and Ilgauskas were non-factors in Game 1, combining for 11 points on 4-of-17 shooting. But Cleveland's two big men scored eight in the first quarter as the Cavs opened a 26-17 lead.
Notes: Noting the rough play in the Orlando-Boston and Houston-Los Angeles series, James was prepared if the Hawks got physical. And given a chance, he took a swipe at the Washington Wizards. "I'm ready for whatever happens," he said. "Washington tried it, but they're not a tough team. They tried to be physical with me and they lost." ... Cavs great Mark Price, now a shooting consultant for the Hawks, said he only thinks about Jordan's shot when it's brought up. "With six seconds to go, we were down one," he said. "So it was really a pretty incredible game. It's sad the only thing anybody remembers is the last shot."
