[May 11, 2009]  (AP)  Heavy rains and thunderstorms were expected across the Gulf of Mexico and southern Great Plains on Monday.

The front extending from western Texas and across the Gulf states was expected to bring an increased risk of flooding and a chance of severe weather.

RestaurantThe heaviest rainfall was expected over Oklahoma and Arkansas, along with hail and strong winds. There was a slight risk for severe weather over eastern Texas and northern Louisiana.

In the Northwest, precipitation was to spread across the region and push into the northern Great Plains by the evening. Snow was on tap for higher elevations. Lower temperatures were behind the storm.

Ahead of the system, pockets of showers and possible thunderstorms were expected to develop across the Plains and the Upper Mississippi Valley.

Temperatures in the Northeast were to rise into the 40s and 50s, while the Southeast was to see temperatures from the 70s to 90s.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Sunday ranged from a low of 18 degrees at Yellowstone, Wyo., to a high of 103 degrees at Palm Springs, Calif.
