[May 12, 2009]  COLUMBUS, Wis. (AP) -- Dozens of residents are out of their homes in a community in south-central Wisconsin while crews wait for a chemical plant fire to burn itself out.

Firefighters were sent to the Columbus Chemical Industries plant late Monday as several explosions were heard.

Dodge County Sheriff Todd Nehls said Tuesday that firefighters were pulled back after one large explosion.

Officials decided to let the fire extinguish itself.

Dodge County authorities said about 140 residents were evacuated and others were told to stay inside and keep their windows closed because of the smoke.

Officials said at least two firefighters were sent to a hospital for checkups.

There was no immediate comment from Columbus Chemical Industries officials.
