[May 13, 2009]  The Illinois Department of Transportation "Click It or Ticket" campaign will begin Friday and continue through May 31. The Lincoln Police Department will again participate in this program to reduce accidents and make our streets safer for the motoring public.

All patrol officers who observe seat belt violations will stop those vehicles and issue a traffic citation to the driver and any passengers who are in violation. There will be zero tolerance for nonuse of seat belts. Additionally, officers will enforce all of the fatal five offenses of speeding, DUI, failure to use seat belts properly, following too closely and improper lane usage.

If you are pulled over for incorrect safety belt use or for nonuse, the fine is $55. Safety belt compliance has jumped 14.2 percentage points from 76.2 percent in 2003 to 90.5 percent in 2008.

Voluntary compliance is the ultimate goal of the Click It or Ticket campaign. Wearing a properly adjusted safety belt significantly reduces the risk of serious injury. Obedience to all traffic laws is key to keeping our streets safe.
