[May 13, 2009]  (AP)  Wednesday's most significant weather was expected over the central U.S. as a storm system moved across south-central Canada.

The cold front of the storm was expected to bring widespread mixed precipitation and thunderstorms across the Midwest, the southern Plains and Ozarks. An associated warm front was to bring showers and thunderstorms as it moved from the Mississippi Valley into the Great Lakes.

Severe weather was expected with both parts of the storm, including large hail and damaging winds from the upper Mississippi Valley to the southern Plains, especially over parts of Illinois and northeastern Missouri.

In the Southeast, showers and thunderstorms were to hit across the Gulf Coast.

In the West, areas of showers and pockets of high-elevation snowfall were to persist across the northern Intermountains and northern Rockies. Another round of precipitation was expected for the Pacific Northwest.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Tuesday ranged from a low of 23 degrees at Mount Washington, N.H., to a high of 104 degrees at Pecos, Texas.
