[May 15, 2009]  University of Illinois Extension in Logan County sponsored a Walk Day event Monday for local elementary students. Children in county elementary schools were invited to participate by walking with their class at recess that day.

A total of 10 schools, 63 teachers and 1,075 students in Logan County schools participated in this activity, walking a total of over 48 miles.

In random drawings among those participating, three classes were awarded bags of trail mix for their classes to snack on during their walks. Winners were the fourth-grade class at Washington-Monroe Elementary in Lincoln, taught by Bev Wunderlin; the kindergarten class at Emden Elementary, taught by Sarah Fleck; and the first-grade class taught by Amy Neece at Northwest Elementary.

Walk Day is an annual event in May, sponsored by University of Illinois Extension. For information about how to get involved next year, contact Patty Huffer at the Logan County Extension office, 732-8289.
