[May 16, 2009]  The Route 66 Heritage Foundation of Logan County is once again bringing its annual garage sale to Logan County. The third annual Route 66 Garage Sale is scheduled for Friday and Saturday, June 12 and 13, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. The garage sale throughout the county will have large vendor sites at McDonald's and Postville Park in Lincoln. In addition, all of the Route 66 communities -- including Atlanta, Lawndale, Lincoln, Broadwell and Elkhart -- will have townwide garage sales. Opening up the entire city of Lincoln for garage sales is new this year. The downtown Lincoln businesses will also have sidewalk sales, thanks to the assistance of Main Street Lincoln.

Another big event happening the same weekend is the 2009 Route 66 Association of Illinois Motor Tour. It will be coming through the area on June 13 between 3 and 6 p.m. The group has announced that their Bicentennial Passport stop for this year's tour will be the Logan County Courthouse. The Railsplitter Antique Auto Club, with special guest Abraham Lincoln, will welcome the motor tour by showcasing their autos on the downtown square surrounding the courthouse. The Galesburg Auto Club will also be visiting and taking part in the festivities, including a Saturday evening presentation to the group by Logan County historian Paul Gleason.

The Route 66 Heritage Foundation of Logan County and project manager Bruce Huskins encourage as much involvement from Lincoln and the surrounding communities as possible. Besides the vendors and families having garage sales in each community, the weekend will be an opportunity for churches, youth organizations and other not-for-profits to get involved and raise funds for their groups. The planners look forward to a very successful event that will showcase Lincoln, Logan County and its Route 66 heritage.

Businesses and "garage-salers" can advertise in the event's map booklet, and businesses are also encouraged to offer weekend specials.

Map booklets can be picked up starting the week of June 8 at the following locations: Horsefeathers in Elkhart, Palms Grill and Country Aire in Atlanta, and the Information Station in Lincoln. During the garage sale, maps will also be available at McDonald's and Postville Park.

Vendor opportunities are still available, and for a small fee your garage sale can be listed. Deadline for placement in the booklet is June 5. Check www.route66garagesale.com for fees, forms and deadlines or call 217-732-8687 with your questions.

Proceeds will help to continue funding the restoration of The Mill on 66 Restaurant/Museum in Lincoln, which is being inducted into the Route 66 Association of Illinois Hall of Fame this year. This event is slated to become a statewide event, possibly as early as next year.

The Route 66 Heritage Foundation is thrilled to have everyone involved in this great family event showcasing Route 66 and what the communities along it have to offer and is encouraging families, organizations, vendors and visitors to take part in the celebration.
