[May 21, 2009]  (AP)  A cold front racing across the Midwest, persistent rain across Florida and thunderstorms in the Southwest were expected to be the most significant weather developments on Thursday.

In the Midwest, a cold front with light, scattered showers was to advance across the northern tier of the central U.S. throughout the afternoon before extending from northern Michigan to Colorado by Thursday evening.

Northeastern Nebraska and South Dakota were to see the heaviest rainfall, with a chance for thunderstorm activity throughout the afternoon.

In the Southeast, the storm system located over the eastern Gulf of Mexico was to trek westward across the Gulf. Light to moderate rainfall, with periods of heavy rainfall and thunderstorms, was to cross northeastern Florida.

In the West, monsoon moisture from the south was to trigger scattered thunderstorms across the Four Corners, increasing in the afternoon and evening.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Wednesday ranged from a low of 26 degrees at Mullan Pass, Idaho, to a high of 105 degrees at Thermal, Calif.
