Extension youth gardening classes, Relay for Life cancer walk and
LCGHS cemetery walk make the Close Up

is offering two different Junior Master Gardener programs this
summer. To register for these classes, please stop by the Logan
County Extension office, 980 N. Postville Drive in Lincoln, between
8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Monday-Friday or call 217-732-8289. On the Web,

Junior Master Gardeners (Level 1) (Current
third, fourth, fifth grade) Tuesday-Thursday, June 23-25, 10-11:30
a.m.
Cost: $15 per participant
Age: Children who were enrolled in third, fourth or fifth
grade during the 2008-2009 school year
This program, modeled after the highly successful Master Gardener
program, offers hands-on group and individual activities. Youth will
learn about plant growth and development, soils and water, insects
and disease, and environmental horticulture and ecology. Maximum of
15 participants will be accepted.
JMG Bird's Eye View (ages 7-9)
Tuesday-Thursday, June 23-25, 1:30-3 p.m.
Cost: $15 per participant
At the JMG Literature in the Garden program, garden-related books
will be used to inspire learning about birds through discussion,
hands-on and fun activities, including a bird walk at Kickapoo Creek
Park (date to be announced). Topics will be different birds and
plants that attract birds. Participants will each receive bird books
to keep as their own. There will also be fun and exciting
activities, followed by a creative snack at each of the sessions. A
maximum of 15 will be accepted for this class.
Relay
for Life walk
I doubt if there is anyone among us that has not been touched or
affected by that dreaded disease –- cancer. This year we will walk
to the theme "Wish Upon a Cure" at the annual Logan County Relay for
Life walk for the American Cancer Society. I invite everyone to join
us on the track of Lincoln Community High School from 6 p.m. on
Friday, June 19, through 6 a.m. Saturday, June 20.
The luminaria to celebrate the survivors of this disease or for
remembrance of those who have fought the fight will be lit for the
Survivor Walk at 9 p.m. As co-chair of the Survivor Walk, I want to
encourage you to call to make certain we have ordered a special
survivor's shirt for you. Notices are being mailed to all whose
names we have, but we don't want to forget anyone. Reminder that
prior to the walk, the survivors' buffet will be served on the LCHS
soccer field from 4:30 to 7 p.m. The program begins on the track at
7. If you are not a survivor, but know of someone who might not read
this, please call me, Tonita Reifsteck, 217-732-9796, or co-chair
Kaye Wilmert, 217-732-9816. Luminaria can be purchased from any of
the 50 teams prior to the walk or that evening.
Any of the teams would welcome more walkers to help us "Wish Upon
a Cure" and make that wish a reality. Join me in this "WISH." --

"Reflections
of Time Past" Old Union Cemetery Walk, sponsored by Logan
County Genealogical and Historical Society.
The community is invited to join the LCGHS on
Saturday, June 6.
Walks times are 10 a.m., 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 2 p.m.
Rain date is Sunday, June 7.
Tickets: $5 each. Free for children under 10 years
of age.
Tickets will be on sale at LCGHS or at the walk.
