IRS has $3.6 million in undeliverable Ill. refunds

[November 30, 2009]  CHICAGO (AP) -- The Internal Revenue Service is looking for nearly 3,600 Illinoisans -- but not for the reasons they probably think.

The IRS owes them money.

Sue Hales, a spokeswoman for the IRS in Illinois, says the postal service has returned almost 3,600 tax refund checks to the agency as undeliverable. Those returned checks total more than $3.6 million.

Hales says the IRS can reissue the checks to taxpayers who provide updated addresses, or they can have the money directly deposited into their bank accounts.

To see if the IRS owes them cash, taxpayers can check at http://www.irs.gov/.
