AARP wants Ill. governor to halt budget cuts

[October 01, 2009]  SPRINGFIELD (AP) -- The AARP is fighting back against budget cuts to services for senior citizens.

The group says the cuts will affect about 20,000 people who depend on state-supported home care.

Other budget cuts are hitting the ombudsman program that helps make sure people get decent care in nursing homes.

The AARP planned to announce a special toll-free line that people can use to contact Gov. Pat Quinn and ask for the money to be restored.

Quinn and lawmakers cut spending in many parts of the budget to help close the biggest deficit in Illinois history.
