[October 05, 2009]  NEW YORK (AP) -- A preview performance of the Broadway revival of "The Royal Family" has been canceled after one of its stars became ill on stage.

Show spokesman Aaron Meier says the curtain came down shortly after the Sunday matinee began when actor Tony Roberts suddenly fell ill.

The actor has been taken by ambulance to a hospital. There's no word on his condition.

Meier said understudy Anthony Newfeld would take over Roberts' role at the Sunday evening performance.

"The Royal Family" is a 1927 comedy by George S. Kaufman and Edna Ferber. The Manhattan Theatre Club production is scheduled to open Thursday at the Samuel J. Friedman Theatre.
