Officials say there were more than 5,300 residential fires in
Illinois last year that left 137 people dead and caused more than
$171 million in property damage. Acting State Fire Marshal Dave
DeFraties says the statistics are tragic because "most fires can be
prevented and the deaths and injuries associated with them can be
avoided."
The theme of this year's Fire Prevention Week is "Stay Fire
Smart! Don't Get Burned." Officials say the goal is to provide
safety information to the public.
