[October 09, 2009]  MASON CITY -- The 1st State Bank of Mason City and Illini Central High School are pleased to present Whitney Vanderpool with the September Student of the Month Award. For demonstrating outstanding character, she receives a $50 savings bond from 1st State Bank and a reference work appropriate to her course of study from the Illini Central High School faculty.

Whitney is the daughter of Rich and Deb Vanderpool. Her classes this year are Leadership, International Relations, Physical Education, AP Calculus, Physics, Spanish III, Introduction to Processing, Computer Applications, and AP Literature and Composition.

In addition, she keeps busy with a number of extracurricular activities. She is a member of National Honor Society and Photography Club. She is also co-editor of PawPrint, the school newspaper.

As a junior, she won awards for pre-calculus and English in the Worldwide Youth in Science and Engineering competition. She will compete in WYSE again this year. Outside of school, Whitney helps with the recycling program and is the former president of Silver Spurs 4-H Club.

She plans to attend University of Illinois Champaign-Urbana, where she will major in biology as a preparation for medical school.
