[October 20, 2009]  (AP)  The Rockies were forecast to continue seeing wintry weather and the East Coast would remain cool Tuesday.

InsuranceA low pressure system spinning over the central Rockies was expected to create a warm front that would extend over the northern and central Plains and into the upper Midwest. Ahead of this trough, moist and warm air would pour in from the Gulf of Mexico and feed ample moisture into the Plains.

This would allow for scattered showers and thunderstorms to pop up over the southern Plains, none of which were expected to turn severe. To the north, this would allow for light rain over the Plains, with flurries possible overnight as lows might dip below freezing. Less than a half an inch of rainfall was expected, with 2-3 inches likely over the higher elevations of the central and northern Rockies. Strong winds would accompany this system, with gusts up to 30 mph across the Dakotas.

Elsewhere, the West Coast would see clearing skies and warmer conditions Tuesday as the trough advected eastward. Forecasters said lingering clouds might cover the Pacific Northwest and northern California.

In the East, cool conditions were expected to persist over the Southeast and Mid-Atlantic States as high pressure would allow for overnight lows to dip to near freezing temperatures again Tuesday night. Mostly sunny skies were expected on the East Coast, with highs near 70 in the South and only reaching to near 50 in the Northeast.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Monday ranged from a low of 28 degrees at Monticello, Ky., to a high of 94 degrees at Pecos, Texas.
