[October 23, 2009]  Tajuana and her husband, Junior McFarland, are the new owners of TJ's, an eatery in the Woodlawn Saving Center, at 837 Woodlawn Road.

RestaurantThe business was formerly known as Triple C Bar-B-Q, owned and operated by Larry and Kay Greer.

Tajuana says she and Junior know the Greers well, and the transition of ownership couldn't have been smoother. The Greers had established a strong clientele since they opened in April, and they sold due to family health issues. Because of that, for the most part, the food will be the same. "If it's not broke, don't fix it," she said.

The McFarlands have added a few specialties to the menu. Junior, who was the head chef at St. Clara's Manor for years, has a passion for cooking, and he will bring that passion to the menu.

There will be homemade soups with Junior making everything from scratch, including the noodles. The business also now offers homemade chili and egg rolls and a specialty: stuffed grilled bread, a sweet bread filled with seafood, beef or pork and then grilled.

Tajuana says the two had been thinking about opening an eatery for years, and she and Junior had done some catering on the side. When the Greers called to say they needed to sell, the McFarlands decided it was time to turn that dream into reality. They had actually looked at the location before the Greers opened it back up. So to them this was an easy decision to purchase the business and begin doing something they had talked about for years.

Tajuana, born and raised in Chicago, came down to Lincoln with her family in 1976 and has been here ever since. Junior is a native of Wapella. Between the two they have seven children, with the youngest being 16.

Tajuana works nights at the Lawrence Place group home, a 16-bed facility, and when her shift is over she goes right to the eatery and mans the front counter and answers phones while Junior cooks up his specialties.

The hard work and long hours don't seem to bother her, and she credits the support from family and friends with making the move to running a business enjoyable and less stressful.

She hopes to expand desserts at TJ's and says she will offer homemade products including, she hopes, a variety of pies.

She and Junior welcome everyone to come in and try their menu. The phone number is 732-2660. The hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m.-8 p.m.
