[October 29, 2009]  (AP)  Wet weather was forecast to persist over the central U.S. on Thursday as a system moved over the Rockies and into the Plains.

The system could create a strong frontal boundary that could sweep toward the Mississippi River. Warm and moist air pouring in from the Gulf of Mexico was expected to create a warm front that could stretch eastward.

The system was forecast to kick up moderate to heavy thunderstorms that could track northward through Mississippi and Tennessee. Some of the storms could turn severe with periods of heavy rain likely in areas of strong storm development.

Meanwhile, a strong cold front was forecast to stretch from the northern Plains to the southern Plains, with heavy precipitation expected over Kansas and Nebraska. Up to 5 inches of snow could fall over the central Plains, while the Dakotas may see up to an inch of snow.

A winter weather advisory was issued from the northern high Plains to the central Rockies and Plains.

The southern Rockies were expected to see lighter precipitation with a dusting of snow over the mountains. Areas ahead of the front could remain warmer and see another rainy day, with up to an inch of rain likely over the western Great Lakes.

In the East, high pressure was expected to build east of the Great Lakes and extend down the East Coast. This could bring a short break in wet weather before the system moves in from the Plains.

The Northeast was expected to remain in the 50s while the Mid-Atlantic States could reach into the 70s again on Thursday.

In the West, the Pacific Northwest was forecast to remain overcast and rainy as a trough lingers over the region.

To the south, cooler overnight lows were expected. Clear skies could bring warming by day but strong cooling by night. Lows were expected to dip to near freezing temperature over the region.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Wednesday ranged from a low of 8 degrees at Yellowstone Lake, Wyo., to a high of 95 degrees at Laredo, Texas.
