Cops: NY man tried to impress girl with tall tale

[September 02, 2009]  WOLCOTT, N.Y. (AP) -- Police say a 20-year-old upstate New York man was in trouble after trying to impress his girlfriend by telling her he had capsized his boat while fishing on Lake Ontario.

Bryan Arquitt, of Fair, Haven was being charged with falsely reporting an incident. When she got the call, the girlfriend immediately called 911 and the local fire department sent out a crew to rescue Arquitt.

After two or three more calls, Arquitt told his girlfriend he was safe and headed to shore.

When authorities confronted Arquitt, he admitted he had called from the parking lot of a convenience store. The incident happened Sunday.

Arquitt was ticketed and given a Sept. 17 court appearance date. Troopers didn't know if he has a lawyer.
