Lincoln Heritage Museum hosts 'Journey Stories'

[September 08, 2009]  The Lincoln Heritage Museum at Lincoln College is pleased to host "Journey Stories," a compelling Smithsonian exhibition that shows how evolving mobility changed a young nation and how transportation made us grow. The accounts of travelers themselves express the hopes and promises of fresh starts, the grim realities of forced migrations and difficult journeys, and the thrills of personal travel.

This exhibit will be on display through Oct. 18 and is free to the public. Tonight (Tuesday) there will be an opening program, "The Journey of the Irish Lord Scully, the Role of the Scully Family in Settling Early Logan County from Ireland." Historian Paul Beaver, who wrote his dissertation on the Scully family, will provide a presentation on the Irish and German immigrants into Logan County, focusing on the wealthy Lord Scully. The program will be at 7 p.m. at the Lincoln Heritage Museum at Lincoln College, followed by the opening of the "Journey Stories" exhibit.

"Journey Stories" has been made possible in Illinois by the Illinois Humanities Council and is part of the Museum on Main Street program, a collaboration between the Smithsonian Institution and the Federation of State Humanities Councils. Support for the Museum on Main Street has been provided by the United States Congress. Support for the Illinois Humanities Council has been provided by the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Illinois General Assembly. The Abraham Lincoln Tourism Bureau of Logan County is also a proud sponsor for "Journey Stories."
