[September 09, 2009]  (AP)  Severe weather was forecast to sweep through the central U.S. on Wednesday as a trough continued moving eastward throughout the day.

HardwareA trough of low pressure would extend over the Plains from a low pressure system in central Canada. This system was expected to produce a cold front while pulling moisture in from the Gulf of Mexico. Scattered showers and thunderstorms were expected to move from the northern and central Plains into the Mississippi River Valley and Great Lakes region. Periods of heavy rainfall were likely, as well as severe storm development, as the front had a history of producing strong winds, large hail and rainfall totals between 1 and 2 inches.

Meanwhile, an area of low pressure was forecast to remain off the East Coast on Wednesday. While the system had low potential for tropical storm development, with high pressure over the Northeast, it was forecast to continue pushing ample moisture over New England, triggering scattered coastal showers throughout the day. Storms weren't expected to turn severe and rainfall totals would remain less than a half an inch. However, coastal flooding would remain a threat along the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast as strong winds continued to push high tides and dangerous surf over the region.

Out West, a low pressure system and associated cold front would push onshore over the Pacific Northwest. As the system developed in the Pacific Ocean, it was expected to have abundant moisture, allowing for moderately heavy showers over eastern Washington, with mixed precipitation over the Cascades. Highs near 70 were expected in the north, while high pressure over California would continue to bring warm and dry conditions.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Tuesday ranged from a low of 18 degrees at Stanley, Idaho, to a high of 104 degrees at Needles, Calif.
