"Hey, Katie," Randy said, walking out. "Want to go for a ride?"
"Not today, Randy," she said, stepping out of the saddle. "Got
something else on my mind."
Randy looked perplexed. Katie blushed a little, then walked up to
Randy and smiled. "I think you need a girlfriend."
"Yeah ... well, things don't always work out ..."
"Not Marcia," Katie said. "Me."
Randy's mouth dropped open. "I, uh ..."
"What's wrong with me?" she asked.
"Nothing. I mean, are you sure ...?"
"Sure that I like you? Sure that I want you for my boyfriend?
Sure that we could enjoy going places together? Yes. Yes, I am."
Randy started to smile. "You like me?"
"Oh, yes," she said. "I have for a long time, and I'm tired of
being invisible. Do you like me, too?"
"Well ... sure, I guess."
"Of course, it'll take a while for you to get used to it. Take a
while for me, too. I'm not used to having a boyfriend like Randall
Jones ... a guy who can do anything and is the catch of the school."
"The ...?"

"Randy, take my hand, smile at me and let's go for a walk
together. We need to get used to this, OK?"
And he did. And the smile was genuine. They walked past the Mule
Barn, hand in hand, looking lovingly at each other, and some of the
guys -- the members of the world dilemma think tank -- were there
and watched the four-legged miracle walk by.
"Well, I'm dipped," said Doc.
"Isn't that the Burchell girl?" Steve said.
Doc nodded. "And about time, I'd say."
Dud looked on in amazement. "Katie Burchell. Wonder what she had
to do to get his attention."
"Something, I think," Doc said, smiling, "in cast iron."
