[September 14, 2009]  (AP)  The southern U.S. was forecast to remain wet and dreary, while the North would continue to see mild weather Monday.

InsuranceAn upper-level low pressure system was expected to hover over the southern Plains and pull abundant moisture in from the Gulf of Mexico. This would trigger scattered showers and thunderstorms over the region, none of which have a history of turning severe. Flow around this system would oppose high pressure in the north and create a stationary frontal boundary that would remain over the Southeastern states. Rainfall amounts between 1 to 2 inches were expected over the southern Plains and lower Mississippi River Valley, while Florida would see lighter showers with rainfall totals under an inch. Cool conditions would persist over the South with highs only reaching into the mid-70s.

To the north, high pressure was forecast to stretch over the Mississippi River Valley and up the Ohio River Valley into the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic states. Mostly sunny skies and warm conditions were expected over these areas with highs reaching into the mid-80s in most places.

In the northern Plains and upper Midwest, a weak cold front would move in from the northern Rockies. This would kick up a few light and scattered showers and thunderstorms. Dry conditions would not allow for heavy rainfall, but this system has a history of producing strong winds and hail over the northern Rockies.

In the West, a trough of low pressure system would continue tracking eastward from the West Coast into the Rockies. This system was forecast to pull moisture with it; thus, scattered thunderstorms might pop up over the Great Basin on Monday. Forecasters also said to expect cooler conditions to persist over the West Coast with highs in the 70s.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Sunday ranged from a low of 24 degrees at Pahaska, Wyo., to a high of 107 degrees at Death Valley, Calif.
