[September 29, 2009]  PEORIA -- The average American consumes about 54 quarts of popcorn a year. Now you can get your fix of the savory snack while supporting a good cause. The W.D. Boyce Council of Boy Scouts of America has kicked off its annual Pecatonica River popcorn sale to raise money for Scouting programs across central Illinois.

Scouts from the council's 14-county area will sell popcorn in front of area stores for the first few weeks of the sale and then will go door-to-door to take orders to be delivered in November. The products being sold this year are 15-pack butter microwave popcorn, 15-pack light microwave popcorn, 15-pack kettle microwave popcorn, a new gourmet caramel bears tin, and original popping corn buckets, including cheese corn, the five-way chocolate lover's, the four-way collector's tins, 30-pack double butter and 100-calorie caramel to-go packs. This year Scouts will also sell $10 and $20 magazine vouchers from Time Magazine Publishing.

More than 70 percent of the money collected during the popcorn sale goes directly to the local Scout units to pay for activities, trips or a week at camp. In addition, selling popcorn helps Scouts set goals and work toward them by committing to a specific task, managing money, taking responsibility and earning their own way.

Boy Scouts of America is a youth development organization that is designed to prepare young people to make ethical and moral decisions throughout their lifetimes. The goals of Scouting consist of citizenship training, character development and personal fitness. Throughout the Boy Scout program, young people are encouraged to advance through ranks by fulfilling requirements in the areas of leadership, service and outdoor skills, and the popcorn fundraising event helps the Scouts pay for many of the program fees.
