[September 29, 2009]  Lincoln/Logan County Arts & Crafts Guild raffled off a 3-foot Christmas tree filled with handmade ornaments. Ornaments were of varied make and material, from carved and painted wooden shapes to folded paper ornaments, with a fabric "yo-yo" garland as background to all. Tickets were sold at the 1800's Craft Fair at the historic Postville Courthouse on Aug. 30 and throughout the Railsplitter Festival. The winner of the raffle is Margie Sheley, who has already taken receipt of her prize. Thanks to all who supported the Arts & Crafts Guild through this fundraising project.

Kathy Horn's son Eric Horn is deployed to Bagram, Afghanistan. Eric was also chosen Airman of the Week, which is quite an honor from his peers over there. Kathy has another son, Joe Horn, who is in the Air National Guard on active duty in Springfield. Kathy is a proud mom and we are proud of her sons' efforts.

Ellen Steffens of Lincoln won the Habitat for Humanity playhouse raffle during the Railsplitting Festival on Sept. 20. Steffens gave the playhouse to her third-grade granddaughter, Payton Rich of Waynesville. Raffle proceeds go to build bigger houses.

The United Way of Logan County is most appreciative of the participation in their IGA grocery raffle. First they want to thank Charlie Lee and the Lincoln IGA for donating the $500 worth of grocery coupons and assisting in the publicity. The winner was Trina McGraw. Their only regret is that you didn't win too. United Way of Logan County thanks each and every one of you for purchasing the raffle tickets. Out of more than 2,000 tickets sold, there was only one winner. We congratulate Trina on this win. A chat with Charlie Lee has assured us that United Way will do this again.

United Way of Logan County had their kick-off breakfast in September. At that time they handed out division packets to many volunteers who will assist in the 2009-2010 campaign. The goal this year is $95,000. Yes, it is a big challenge but iis most important, due to the decrease in state funding and the growing need due to the economic conditions we find ourselves in. There are thousands of people in Logan County who are counting on the United Way through their funding the 16 agencies they help. It is easy to give. Just give a one-time donation through your place of business, your church or any volunteer who may contact you. You can also call 217-735-4499 to pledge or send a contribution to United Way of Logan County, PO Box 684, Lincoln, IL 62656.

The Mill on 66 is having a cookbook fundraiser. Recipes are needed by Monday, Oct. 5! E-mail them to admin@abe66.com.

Congratulations to Peggy Steinmetz-Koehler of Minnesota for being the winner in the September Grab Your Fork drawing. Peggy won for her submission of Miss C's Dream Bars. Peggy chose as her prize the Williams-Sonoma cookbook "Savoring China."

You, too, could win a great prize, but you have to submit those recipes to be eligible. Remember, every recipe gives you another chance at winning.
