A high pressure system was meanwhile expected to bring dry and clear conditions to the Southeast and Mississippi Valley. As a result, national weather forecasters issued freeze warnings for parts of the Appalachians and fire weather watches for northern Alabama, Georgia, and Florida.

Dry conditions were also forecast in the Plains.

Mild to warm weather was expected to develop in the Southwest on Saturday. A spring storm was forecast to slam into the West coast on Sunday, bringing wet, windy weather.

Temperatures in the Northeast were forecast to rise into the 40s and 50s, while the Southeast was expected to see temperatures in the 70s and 80s. The Northern Plains was expected to rise into the 50s and 60s, and the Northwest was forecast temperatures in the 40s, 50s, and 60s.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Friday ranged from a low of -4 degrees at Stanley, Idaho to a high of 90 degrees at Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
