[April 20, 2010]  (AP)  Wet weather will persist in the South on Monday while the East Coast will see diminishing showers. A strong low pressure system in the northeastern U.S. will finally start to push eastward and into the Atlantic Ocean. This will put an end to wet weather over the Mid-Atlantic states. But moist flow around this system will allow for light rain to continue over parts of New England and the extreme Northeast. Expect rainfall totals to be less than a quarter of an inch on Monday. Highs will remain in the 50s and 60s over New England.

To the South, a stationary front lingering over the Gulf of Mexico will continue kicking up scattered showers and thunderstorms. A small trough that has brought wet weather to Texas and the southern Plains will continue moving eastward into the lower Mississippi River Valley and Southeast. Due to abundant moisture feeding this system from the Gulf, some areas may see some severe weather with periods of heavy rain, strong winds and hail in areas of thunderstorm development. Expect highs to reach into the 70s and 80s again on Monday.

Farther west, another trough of low pressure will streak across the southwestern U.S. This will produce cloudy skies with a few scattered showers over Southern California and Arizona, reaching into New Mexico by Monday evening. Elsewhere in the West, another low pressure system spinning in the Pacific Ocean will push a cold front over the Pacific Northwest. This will bring another round of scattered showers to Oregon, Washington and northern California. Expect highs in the 60s in the north, while Southern California will reach into the lower 70s.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Sunday ranged from a low of minus 11 degrees at Bridgeport, Texas, to a high of 96 degrees at Phoenix, Ariz.
