The cold front was expected to move into the eastern Plains and Mississippi Valley, where it would pull substantial moisture northward from the Gulf of Mexico. This moisture would produce heavy rain and thunderstorms that would be capable of producing tornadoes. The Storm Prediction Center issued a moderate risk of severe weather development in the lower Mississippi Valley and a slight risk of severe weather to the north into Illinois, Iowa and Nebraska. Residents in this area were told to monitor local weather conditions and be prepared for severe thunderstorms and tornadoes.

To the west of the storm, cold air was forecast to produce high-elevation snow in the Rockies and Utah. Winter storm warnings were posted for this area in anticipation of over 2 feet of new snow. In addition, strong wind gusting to 50 mph was possible.

Late in the day, a Pacific storm would approach the Northwest coast, producing rain and high-elevation snow in Washington and Oregon into Saturday.

The Northeast was forecast to rise into the 60s and 70s, while the Southeast would see temperatures in the 70s and 80s. The southern Plains would rise into the 80s and 90s, while the Northwest would see temperatures in the 60s and 70s.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Thursday ranged from a low of 14 degrees at Kenton, Mich., to a high of 91 degrees at Pecos, Texas.
