[April 27, 2010]  (AP)  Troughs of low pressure near the east and west coasts were expected to translate into areas of active weather in the Northeast and Northwest on Tuesday.

InsuranceIn the East, a trough of low pressure developing in the Northeast would keep showery weather over New England. Cold air from the north would drop daytime temperatures across the region and allow rainfall over the region to change into heavy, wet snow showers across the mountains. Forecasters said snowfall across the higher elevations may create hazardous conditions with downed tree limbs and power lines, which might cause scattered power outages.

Meanwhile, an area of low pressure from the mid-Mississippi Valley would drop southeastward into the Tennessee Valley with chances of precipitation and thunderstorms. Fairly light rain showers would accompany this low as this system would not carry much moisture.

Out West, another trough of low pressure was forecast to swing a cold front through the Pacific Northwest and California. As the disturbance trekked inland, onshore flow would direct a plume of subtropical moisture across the coast. Significant moisture and energy from the front would produce numerous rain and high-elevation snow showers with periods of heavy precipitation, chances of isolated thunderstorms, periods of strong and gusty winds, and cooler temperatures throughout the day.

Finally, high pressure would dominate the central U.S. with quiet and fair weather activity.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Monday ranged from a low of 10 degrees at Laramie, Wyo., to a high of 100 degrees at Death Valley, Calif.
