Resolution of the Logan County Board recognizing the Logan County Airport's 60th anniversary

[April 29, 2010]  In recognition of the Logan County Airport's 60th anniversary, this month the Logan County Board passed the following resolution. The resolution identifies how the airport serves general aviation needs of the community, as well as being part of the national aviation infrastructure providing economic and transportation needs.

WHEREAS, airports have long been identified as critical to the infrastructure, economic growth and transportation needs in the United States, and

WHEREAS, under the direction of the Logan County Board of Supervisors (now known as the Logan County Board) and the Airport Committee, a public airport to be owned by the citizens of Logan County was built northeast of Lincoln to ensure the opportunity for the county to progress with the nation through aviation-related benefits, and

WHEREAS, the Logan County Airport opened on January 1, 1950, was dedicated later that year on June 25 and will celebrate 60 years of operation on Saturday, May 1, 2010 during Airport Daze, and

WHEREAS, the Logan County Airport serves area businesses and industry professional staff flying between company locations and customer sites for factory tours, product demonstrations, sales calls and meetings with customers, suppliers, and other business partners, and

WHEREAS, developers frequently fly in to the Logan County Airport when evaluating economic opportunities in the county, bringing the potential of new business and industry, and

WHEREAS, the Logan County Airport is home to several businesses including an aerial farm chemical and seeding service and an aircraft repair shop, and holds potential for further business or industry development on its grounds, and

WHEREAS, flights at the Logan County Airport in recent years have supported a broad range of services including aerial digital photography used for GIS mapping, angel flights for special medical needs, assessment and cleanup in environmental incidents involving hazardous materials, crop and land assessments and helicopters used to transport repairmen to areas that are difficult to reach and employees who patrol gas pipelines to check for damage, and

WHEREAS, flights from the Logan County Airport also are used by emergency service personnel when conducting search and rescue for lost persons and other law enforcement matters, and for anti-terrorism training, and

WHEREAS, flights from the Logan County Airport provided assistance to state and county representatives, emergency management and the National Weather Service in confirmation and assessment of the EF3 tornado damage in 2009, which aided in remediation planning, resources and recovery, and

WHEREAS, the Logan County Airport has aviation training opportunities with flight instruction and aircraft rentals available at reasonable prices, and

WHEREAS, numerous persons who began their training at the Logan County Airport have served in the defense of our country through military service as pilots and test pilots or in the areas of aircraft repair and aviation support services, and

WHEREAS, many pilots who began their training at Logan County Airport have pursued various commercial careers such as airline and cargo pilots and aerial land surveyors, and

WHEREAS, the Logan County Airport provides a location for numerous aviation-related recreation, such as glider flights, skydiving, airplane rides, remote control aircraft demonstrations, air shows featuring vintage and modern aircraft and the Young Eagles first flight program for youngsters, and

WHEREAS, the Logan County Airport grounds also attracts tourists with a geocache for the high-tech GPS treasure hunting game, and as the site of the popular Art and Balloon Festival which brings thousands of visitors to Lincoln/Logan County every year, and

WHEREAS, the Logan County Airport is home to the Heritage In Flight Museum, which preserves aviation history with displays from all military conflicts of this century

in a historic WWII prisoner-of-war barracks and an outdoor line of vintage and modern aircraft and vehicles, and

WHEREAS, the Logan County Airport, which originally cost $400,000, is maintained through state and federal programs and locally-generated revenues from the rental of 30 hangars, five buildings, fuel sales, farm ground that is cash rented by the acre and is rented for the Balloon Festival,

NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Logan County Board recognizes the Airport Committee for its work for 60 years in maintaining a public airport that enhances the quality of life of local residents and businesses, supports the local economy, provides recreational opportunities and contributes to the greater nationwide aviation infrastructure.
