[August 03, 2010]  Community Action Partnership of Central Illinois has announced its 2010 Community Services Block Grant Scholarship recipients. The winners of the scholarships are Hannah Day of Piatt County; Nathaniel Ed of Menard County; Jonah Cooley, Alexa Dereak and Cody Haas of DeWitt County; Katy Clark of Mason County; and Kathryn McIntosh of Logan County.

HardwareThe recipients each received $1,000 at a meeting of the governing board of directors of Community Action Partnership of Central Illinois on Thursday. The funds will be used toward expenses incurred by continuing their education. Steve Lobb, board president, and Angela Stoltzenburg, executive director of the agency, presented the awards.

The Department of Commerce and Economic Development made funds for these scholarships available to income-eligible individuals of high academic merit or potential. The applicants are attending an Illinois college and reside in Fulton, DeWitt, Logan, Mason, Menard or Piatt County, which are Community Action's six-county service area. The recipients are chosen by a scholarship committee made up of members of the governing board of the Community Action Partnership.

Kathy Shepherd, Community Action's community services director, said: "It was a real challenge for the board members to choose the recipients this year because the applicants were so academically qualified and deserving of this educational grant."

Community Action serves low-income residents in many capacities, including the Community Service program, LIHEAP, Weatherization, Senior Nutrition and Transportation, Foster Grandparents, Small Business Loan program, and Head Start and Early Head Start. For more information, visit www.capcil.org.
