[August 03, 2010]  (AP)  Scattered storms were forecast to continue moving eastward through the country Tuesday, following a strong front that extends from the Northeast to the central Plains.

High pressure over the Gulf of Mexico would act to push ample moisture into the central U.S., allowing for scattered storms to develop along the front. Large hail, damaging winds, heavy rainfall and even tornadoes were expected to develop anywhere from the Great Lakes to the central Plains. This system had a history of producing heavy downpours, so most areas along the front would see between a half of an inch and an inch of rain, with areas under severe storms getting up to 2 inches. Thus, flooding would remain a concern over the upper and mid-Mississippi River Valley. Highs were expected to remain in the 80s over most of the northern U.S.

Meanwhile, in the South, hot and uncomfortable conditions would persist as a ridge of high pressure allowed for plenty of sunshine. Flow around this system would continue pushing moisture onshore, making favorable conditions for scattered afternoon storms. As high temperatures vary around 100 degrees, high humidity would allow for heat indexes reaching well above 110 degrees again Tuesday.

In the West, monsoon storms would persist in the Southwest as a ridge of high pressure trapped moisture that moves in from the South. This would allow for another day of high-level showers and thunderstorms over Arizona and New Mexico.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Monday ranged from a low of 29 degrees at Stanley, Idaho, to a high of 115 degrees at Death Valley, Calif.
