Company defends Bellagio mattress in name suit

[August 07, 2010]  LAS VEGAS (AP) -- An Italian mattress maker says its "Bellagio Lavender" mattresses are named to pay homage to its home country, not to infringe on the MGM Resorts International casino-hotel on the Las Vegas Strip.

Magniflex USA President Marco Magni says his company is reviewing a lawsuit filed Wednesday by MGM Resorts, but believes it is largely without merit.

MGM Resorts says in its suit that consumers may be confused with the maker's mattresses and hotel-branded mattresses that are sold online and at the resort.

Magni says its mattress is named after the Northern Italian city. He says many of the company's mattresses are named for regions in Italy because the company is proud of its national heritage.

The mattress features an infusion of pure lavender.
