[August 07, 2010]  (AP)  Storms were anticipated again across the Southeast as a stationary front stretched from the Middle Atlantic states into the Gulf states on Saturday.

A ridge of high pressure building over the Great Lakes and New England was expected to allow for a front to hover over the South. This system was forecast pull in moisture from the Atlantic Ocean and Gulf of Mexico, which was expected to trigger scattered showers and thunderstorms.

These storms were likely to turn severe by afternoon. This front has a history of producing strong winds and periods of heavy rainfall. The rain was expected to slightly alleviate the hot and uncomfortable conditions in the region, but highs remaining in the 90s were expected to allow for heat indexes to reach above 100 again.

To the north, high pressure was expected to allow for more comfortable conditions, as cooler and drier air moves in from the north. The Midwest and Great Lakes were forecast to see a few patchy clouds with highs in the 80s. In the Plains, a trough of low pressure was forecast to strengthen as it moves off the northern Rockies. This was expected to push a warm front through the northern Plains and upper Midwest, bringing scattered showers and thunderstorms with it.

In the West, scattered storms were expected to persist in the Southwest due to lingering monsoonal moisture. These storms were forecast to remain light and scattered, with none expected to turn severe. The rest of the West Coast was forecast to remain unchanged as high pressure allowed for coastal clouds with plenty of sunshine and warm conditions in the valleys.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states on Friday ranged from a low of 33 degrees at Truckee-Tahoe, Calif., to a high of 109 degrees at Goodyear, Ariz.
