[August 11, 2010]  (AP)  Excessive heat was forecast to continue from the southern Great Plains to the Tennessee Valley on Wednesday as a strong ridge of high pressure held in place.

Moist south winds combined with high temperatures were likely to produce heat indexes to around 110.

To the north, a frontal system was expected to sag southward into the Ohio Valley and northern Mid-Atlantic, giving a slight relief from the recent heat wave. Widely scattered showers and thunderstorms were expected from the upper Midwest to the Ohio Valley, Tennessee Valley and Mid-Atlantic. Strong to severe storms were possible, especially near and along the frontal system.

Another cold front over the northern Rockies would slowly move east, triggering scattered showers and thunderstorms across the northern Intermountain West and northern Plains. Severe weather would become possible later in the day, especially in the northern Plains.

Moving to the Southeast, a tropical depression in the eastern Gulf of Mexico would slowly track northwestward toward the Mississippi and Louisiana coasts. It was expected to become a tropical storm before Wednesday afternoon as it entered the north-central Gulf of Mexico. The depression would carry a lot of tropical moisture with it, which was likely to produce heavy rain, especially near the center of the low. These rains were expected to persist in Florida and along the central and eastern Gulf Coast at least through Thursday.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Tuesday ranged from a low of 35 degrees at Lake Yellowstone, Wyo., to a high of 114 degrees at Death Valley, Calif.
