[August 13, 2010]  (AP)  Rain was forecast to persist in the Gulf states as the remnants of a tropical depression continued pushing ample moisture onshore from the Gulf of Mexico on Friday.

While the system had significantly reduced in size and strength, it would continue kicking up scattered showers and thunderstorms. Rainfall totals ranging between 3 and 5 inches were anticipated from eastern Texas to Florida for this storm. Thus, flooding would remain a concern over the Mississippi Delta and nearby low levels.

To the north, a front that brought rain to the Mid-Atlantic states would push offshore and high pressure would build over the eastern half of the country. This would bring plenty of sunshine and, with humid air moving in from the south, allow for another hot and humid day with heat indexes reaching into the 100s. Heat advisories had been issued across most of the mid-Mississippi River Valley, as well as the Tennessee and Ohio River valleys.

In the Plains, a low pressure system would strengthen as it moved off the northern and central Rockies and into the northern and central Plains. This system would push a frontal boundary through the Plains and into the upper Midwest, which would kick up scattered showers and thunderstorms. These storms had a good chance of turning severe, as they would have warm and humid air just to the south, feeding in strength and energy.

In the West, a warming trend was expected to start across the West Coast on Friday as a trough lifted and high pressure built in. This would help push moisture and cool air away and into the Pacific Ocean, allowing for sunny skies and warmer conditions.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Thursday ranged from a low of 30 degrees at Bryce Canyon, Utah, to a high of 111 degrees at Gila Bend, Ariz.
