[August 14, 2010]  (AP)  Scattered storms were forecast to sweep through the Midwest on Saturday.

A low pressure system tracking eastward across the U.S. and Canadian border was expected to create a cold front over the upper Mississippi River Valley. It was forecast to move through the Great Lakes, extend down the Ohio River Valley, and into the mid-Mississippi region by the evening, kicking up scattered showers and thunderstorms, some severe.

Heavy downpours were also forecast as strong southerly flow pulled moisture in from the Gulf of Mexico. Temperatures were expected to drop slightly into the 70s over the northern Plains.

The rest of the eastern U.S. was forecast to remain hot and humid due to a lingering ridge of high pressure over the East Coast. Highs were to remain in the 80s and 90s east of the Mississippi and in the southern and central Plains. Heat advisories remained in effect throughout Saturday because humid conditions created heat indexes reaching well into the 100s.

In the Southeast, the remnants of Tropical Depression Five were forecast to bring scattered showers throughout the day, extending into the Mid-Atlantic states.

Warmer temperatures were forecast on the West Coast as a trough of low pressure finally moved eastward and a high pressure system grew, increasing offshore flow, pushing cool and moist air into the Pacific, and allowing for warm and sunny conditions.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Friday ranged from a low of 32 degrees at Pinedale, Wyo., to a high of 109 degrees at Goodyear, Ariz.
