 More than 100 high school seniors applied for the competitive
scholarships and Joshua was one of 10 well-deserving winners honored
Tuesday at the Illinois State Fair. He will receive a $2,000 deposit
into a Bright Start College Savings Program account.Joshua, son
of Stan and Lisa Clark, plans to pursue a degree in diesel-powered
equipment technology at Illinois Central College. He's already had
some on-the-job training, helping his father maintain trucks and
trailers and working the "dirty jobs" -- fixing machinery and
producing swine -- at Paulus Farms.
The Illinois State Treasurer's Office supports the pursuit of
higher education at an Illinois college or university through the
Excellence in Agriculture Scholarship Program. The office has
awarded $145,000 in scholarships to rural and urban students seeking
degrees in a broad array of agriculture-related fields, from crop
and livestock production to agribusiness, engineering,
communications, economics and animal science.
Bright Start is a 529 college savings plan administered by the
treasurer's office. It was recently named one of the top five
college savings programs in the country by Kiplinger's Personal
Finance.
