The prime topic was the ongoing construction of the new Humane
Society shelter on Lincoln Parkway. Lyle Johnson reported that the
foundation and floor have been poured and that the Lincolnland
Technical Education Center at Lincoln Community High School will
begin to frame in the building at the end of this month.
It was pointed out that contractors hired to supply skills or
materials were all local, with some giving significant discounts on
their normal charges.
Besides LTEC doing a great deal of the construction, J & J
Contractors handled the concrete work. Leith Plumbing is handling
the plumbing requirements, and Global Tech Training will install the
HVAC system. Alexander Lumber, R.A. Mechanical and Quality Glass
also will be involved in the build, supplying materials.
Within days, Mashburn Well Drilling will begin drilling the well
for the property.
Lee Hahn stated that the 3,200-square-foot facility currently has
a cost of $263,705.10.
Hahn said some interior equipment needs could alter that cost to
a small degree.
In other matters, the Humane Society says their pressing needs are
still the same. Regardless of a new shelter, foster homes are needed
now and will continue to be needed after the shelter is opened.
There is also a constant need for dry cat and dog food as well as
litter.

At last July's board meeting it was approved that the Humane
Society should become involved in the investigation of animal
cruelty complaints. The board determined that animal cruelty
problems are part of their mission.
HSLC volunteers who are accepted for the training will be
required to pass a state test to be a humane investigator.
A membership drive is in process and the committee is working on
being able to accept payments for membership and other items and
events via PayPal for convenience.
The membership committee also will have a "Loyal Friends Fall
Festival" in Scully Park on Oct. 2.
