[August 19, 2010]  (AP)  Soaking rains were forecast to continue across the southeastern quadrant of the nation Thursday as a frontal boundary remained stretched from the Mid-Atlantic through the southern Plains.

Ample moisture from the Gulf of Mexico would heighten instability along the front and aid in producing scattered showers, locally heavy rainfall and thunderstorms through the afternoon. Excessive rainfall over these already heavily saturated areas would translate into various flood watches and warnings throughout these regions. By the afternoon, rain in the Mid-Atlantic would begin to taper off as the front dropped southward. Highs in the Southeast and the southern Plains would remain relatively hot.

Meanwhile, to the north, high pressure over the Ohio Valley would begin to break down Thursday, thus allowing a cold front over the upper Midwest to advance eastward. Showers and thunderstorms would accompany the front as it moved through the upper Great Lakes.

As the cold front exited eastward, a low pressure trough from the West would reach the high Plains in the afternoon. Strong to severe thunderstorms were expected to develop in advance of the approaching system from the northern and central Plains into upper Mississippi Valley.

In the West, monsoon thunderstorms would continue throughout the Four Corners as subtropical moisture streamed into the region. Seasonably cool and drier conditions were expected across the Pacific Northwest and California.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Wednesday ranged from a low of 28 degrees at Charleston, Nev., to a high of 119 degrees at Death Valley, Calif.
