[August 24, 2010]  (AP)  Scattered storms were forecast to continue sweeping through the center of the country Tuesday as a front moved through the Plains.

A loInsurancew pressure system tracking through central Canada would create a cold front that would extend into the U.S. The system would stretch down the northern, central and into the southern Plains, kicking up scattered showers and thunderstorms. By evening, the system was expected to reach into the mid-Mississippi River Valley. Periods of heavy storms were expected to develop along this front as it pulled ample moisture in from the Gulf of Mexico. This system has a history of producing heavy rainfall, strong winds and even hail.

The southern U.S. would remain hot and humid with highs in the 100s and heat indexes above 110 degrees, while the northern Plains and upper Midwest would see more comfortable temperatures with highs in the 70s and 80s.

In the East, more mild weather was anticipated as a strong ridge of high pressure dominated the East Coast. This ridge would quickly build in as a low pressure system in the Northeast pushed offshore. Thus, sunny skies with warm temperatures were expected over the Mid-Atlantic states as well as the Ohio and Tennessee River valleys. However, a few clouds may linger over the extreme Northeast and northern New England. Highs in the 60s and 70s were expected in the North, while the Southeast would remain in the 90s.

Out West, warm weather would persist across the West Coast. A strong ridge of high pressure had built in and would continue creating strong offshore flow. Coastal regions would range from the 70s to 80s, while the deserts and valleys would reach well into 100s.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Monday ranged from a low of 24 degrees at Stanley, Idaho, to a high of 116 degrees at Death Valley, Calif.
