[August 25, 2010]  (AP)  The cold front that pounded through the central U.S. Tuesday was forecast to continue advancing eastward and slowly weaken Wednesday.

Most of the precipitation was expected to be in Texas, where the southern end of the cold front would interact with the tropical moisture coming from Mexico. The northern part of the cold front would produce light rain and showers over portions of the Ohio Valley and eastern Great Lakes. After the cold front moved through, from the Great Lakes to the Northeast, temperatures were expected to fall into the 60s and lower 70s Wednesday.

The other area of significant precipitation was expected across New England as an area of low pressure strengthened just off the coast early Wednesday. Sufficient onshore flow would aid in producing steady rain early Wednesday. As the low pressure system intensified during the day, rain was also expected to increase in intensity.

Farther south, unsettled weather was expected to continue across the Mid-Atlantic states as a low pressure system departed slowly.

In the Southeast, a trough of low pressure was expected to remain nearly stationary from southern Georgia across the northern Gulf Coast, resulting in continued showers and thunderstorms, mainly in Florida and Georgia.

Out West, a strong ridge of high pressure would hold across the West and slowly move eastward Wednesday and Thursday. As a result, warm to hot inland temperatures would continue, with fire weather possible in the Northwest, northern Rockies, northern Plains and parts of the Sierras. The coast, on the other hand, would see a cool-off as sea breezes kicked up and the marine layer deepened.

More widespread cooling was expected Thursday and Friday as a large trough of low pressure ushered in a strong cold front. Temperatures behind this front were expected to drop back down below average.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Tuesday ranged from a low of 24 degrees at Stanley, Idaho, to a high of 119 degrees at Death Valley, Calif.
